cover design for school catalog
This was another assignment I had. It was to create a catalog cover for my school. For my focus elements, I decided to go around and take plenty of photos. I took pictures of what I thought stood out more in my school (for example, the Thinking Man statue we have). I also photographed some flowers that looked decent enough to be on my cover design. Those flowers in the leftmost circle is actually a picture that I took; I just edited it heavily and put on a really cool looking filter (unfortunately, I forgot which filter it was). In fact, I put the same filter for all my pictures on this cover, to some varying degree, until I liked how it looked. I especially like the filter on the big cover photo, because of how it made the underside of the building’s roof look.
If you look carefully at the circle containing the picture of our Thinking Man statue, you can see that I aligned the roof in that specific picture with the roof of the structure in the bigger picture. I did that purposely because it looked a lot more symmetric and pleasing to the eye than if I left it unaligned.
Moving on to the bottom half of the catalog cover. I made a background of a bunch of shapes in different greens. I layered the shapes and made sure to lower the opacity so that you could see part of each shape. This creates a really cool effect, and it looks much better than the boring solid one shade of green I had on there earlier.
I made sure to incorporate my school’s coat of arms, and I put it right smack in the middle. With the “MSJHS” and the “2018”, I had a lot of trouble deciding how to arrange the words. I wanted to be creative in the placement. I decided to go for a “stacked” letter look, choosing a font that made the words look 3D. I also went into “blending options” for this text and modified it to look like it was engraved in the cover.
Finally, for the “catalog” text, I made sure to keep it white so that it would stand out. After all, I am designing a cover for a CATALOG, so it’s important that when people see it, that they immediately know what they’re looking at. I chose a font that was similar to the “warriors” font on the big background picture, just to keep the consistency.
Overall, I used a color scheme of white and a couple different shades of green, because these are my school’s colors.
