Hey guys! I'm trying something new today. Welcome to my first ever Kpop album review. We're starting off with Stray Kids' I AM YOU, which was released on Monday, October 22nd (USA date). Since I've never done one of these before, I don't really know if there's a certain way I should order or structure it, so I'm going to improvise. Let's get started. First, let's talk about Stray Kids. Stray Kids debuted THIS YEAR in march. They're pretty young; the oldest member is 21 years old, and the youngest is my age, 17 (in USA years. In Korea, they would all be a year older). They've been getting pretty popular lately, and I first heard about them in July. Alright, here's a list of the tracks: Here's my ranking of each song in the album, aside from the introduction song, "YOU".
I'm going to talk about each song. Let's go in order. 1. I AM YOU This is the title track of the album, and it's my favorite song right now. I have it on repeat! The lyrics are beautiful; the song is about unity and togetherness. The song is saying that with you by my side, I'll be able to achieve greater dreams. The chorus is "I am you, I see me in you" and also "I found you, I found me in you" which means that we're all alike and facing the same obstacles. Yet we fit each other perfectly and we must always stay by each other's sides so that we're never alone. Like most of their other songs, the rap and vocals blend perfectly together, with a perfect balance between the two. It doesn't hurt that the chorus is incredibly catchy and has a sweet melody. 2. MY SIDE MY SIDE is one of the most interesting and unique songs I have ever heard. It starts off slow and soft, and about twenty seconds into the song, there's a really catchy beat drop that leads into the rap. I thought the song was really weird at first, but I listened to it a couple more times and I really started getting into it. This song seems especially personal, more so than the other ones. The reason why is because the first lyrics are "I hope this song's lyrics reach your ears" which seems like they're talking to the listener and their fans personally. The other lyrics talk about how even at our worst points, they will always stand by our side. They're once again calling for unity and building a support system for one another, and to give each other courage. In this way, the meaning of the lyrics are similar to "I AM YOU". 3. N/S OPPOSITE is basically an all rap song, and it sounds really good. The general message is that we shouldn't be indecisive, and we shouldn't doubt our decisions. There are two sides to life: either you work hard or you don't. The beat is fresh in this song, and overall it's chill music. 4. 0325 This is a really fast paced song, and the chorus could be an anime introduction song. I don't know why, but it has that beat and feel to it that a lot of animes have in their title scenes. All of Stray Kids' songs contain beautiful lyrics and well thought out meaning, but I especially like this song. The reason why is because they're talking about how we'll keep going up until we reach our dreams and the pathway to those dreams is becoming clearer everyday. We aren't going to stop until we reach our goals, and if we fail, we try again. And of course, they have a smooth and cool transition from their rap to their vocals. What a bop. 5. GET COOL I like the flow of this song, but the lyrics aren't as meaningful as some of their other songs. Don't get me wrong; I still love this song and I know that not all songs can have that, but since all the other songs in this album do, I'm going to have to dock some points off, you know? Anyways, that's mostly why it's second to last. It's such a happy, fun song. The song expresses that we should live in the moment and day to day, and not worry too much about what's happening tomorrow. It's also about how we don't need much to live a genuine life. Chan's "getting cooler" at the end of the song is also pretty iconic in my eyes. 6. HERO'S SOUP This song shouts innocence to me. Before I get into that, this song is really unique in this album, because it doesn't contain much rap. Also, it's slower than the other songs. The meanings are quite different too. This song paints a picture in your mind, creates a story. It talks about a father drinking a spicy soup everyday in the morning to cure his hangovers. The lines leading into the chorus are repeats of "I didn't know anything," which leads me back to the innocence that shone in the song. However, by the end of the song, they start to understand, as they repeat the lines "which is why I know, that's why I'm able to understand." I'm sure there's a deeper meaning to all of this, but since I'm depending on english translations, I didn't really pick anything up. Alright guys, that was my short review. Honest to god, I LOVED all these songs in the "I AM WHO" album. Whenever I'm in the car, I always set up playlists so that I can jam out to music, and all these songs are always in those playlists. Stray Kids are a bright and young Kpop group, and I hope that if you didn't know who they are, you want to learn more about them after reading my review. Happy Sunday!
