Birthday card #1
This is a birthday card cover I recently created for one of my good friends. As you can see, there is a slice of cake, a can of Sprite, and two oranges on the cover. At first glance, the choice of subjects may seem a little random, but I have good reason for it. The recipient of this card absolutely HATES cake, soda (or any carbonated drinks), and oranges. So of course, I HAD to feature those items on my cover! (I'm not a bad friend. Seriously, guys.)
I went with a geometric design, because we all hate math. I started with the easy stuff: the oranges. I made the top parts of the oranges lighter because that's where the imaginary light was hitting them. Then, I designed the cake. I made it vanilla (she prefers chocolate flavor), but I did include something she DOES like, which is the strawberry on top of the cake, because I'm not COMPLETELY a bad person. I also made a plate so the cake would have something to sit on. For the soda, I went with Sprite. Originally, I was going to create a Coca Cola can, but I decided that I already had the red color in the strawberry, and I wanted to make the card cover as COLORFUL as possible (yes, she prefers neutral, darker colors). The sprite can contains blues, greens, yellows, and grays. Finally, for the text, I went with more of a bubbly, handwritten font. I expanded the font and filled in the expanded areas with the color white to make the text stand out more. I reorganized these elements until I liked the way it looked. I decided that the text would be off to the side to complement the stars of the show, the actual creative components. I placed the cake in the middle because she hates cake the most out of the three objects. I also filled in the background with a nice mid-blue color. I thought that the card was missing something. I probably stared at it for a good five minutes before I added in the light blue border. I think that border really pulls the whole thing together. And there you have it! I completed this in 2.5 hours. I started two days before her actual birthday because I totally didn't forget that her birthday was coming up (!!). *All elements were made by ME. *I used the free program FireAlpaca *Wanna print it out?
